Walker Consultants provided parking design for two 400-space lots and a 1,000-space structure for the Pittsburgh Sports and Exhibition Authority, the first project in the world to receive the Parksmart (TM) Gold certification.
The project was also honored with a 2019 International Parking & Mobility Institute Award of Excellence.
The project serves events at PNC Ballpark and Heinz Field, as well as local retail, office and public transit patrons. A flexible Parking Access and Revenue Control System (PARCS) accommodates this wide mix of transient, permit and event parkers.
Walker paid special attention to queuing concerns. Access automation was critical to maintaining the desired traffic flow, as was integrating the various parking management systems. Space availability systems that inform visitors of the number of open spaces in each area are a key part of improving traffic flow and user convenience.
