Wayzata, Minnesota
Walker Consultants provided structural and functional engineering for Wayzata, Minnesota’s first public parking structure. The elegant, compact design by HGA fits seamlessly into Wayzata’s “small town” atmosphere. The garage is clad in sections of dark-gray brick so that the exterior contrasts with the lighter-stone and buff-colored buildings along the adjoining street.
The magic of the 406-space garage lies in its space-saving circulation (only 283 sq ft/stall), which allowed a tie-back retaining wall to be constructed below the neighborhood, so the garage footprint recedes into the hillside. The upper parking level has its own entry, off a side street, making a space-consuming ramp unnecessary.
A parking guidance system uses accurate car count message centers to display available spaces, and there are charging stations for electric vehicles.
The design received a 2018 Award of Merit from the International Parking Institute.
