Belmont Park Arena

Structure
Belmont Park has been operating as a horse racing facility since 1905. Recently, it also became the home of the 18,000-seat UBS Arena (the new home of the NHL’s New York Islanders) and is adding retail and a hotel to make a mixed-use entertainment campus. Walker is the Engineer of Record for the 1,450-space, six-level parking structure. Our services included master planning, functional and structural design, MEPFP engineering, operations plan, operator RFP, and curb management plan. As the parking consultant for the campus, we also designed the electric vehicle (EV) charging stalls, revenue control system, parking guidance system, CCTV locations, and the roll-down gate at all entry lanes.
Event parking has unique challenges.
With so many people entering and exiting within a short period of time, circulation and operational efficiency are paramount. Walker assisted the team in designing a high-functioning campus by:
- Using our expertise in both design and operations to help develop a plan for distributing 4,000 spaces throughout the campus with a focus on pedestrian experience, allocation strategies to distribute event demand, minimizing queues and circulation challenges.
- Consulting on rideshare pickup/drop-off locations. With a large volume of transactions anticipated before and after events, we established the number and geometry of lanes needed, created an approach for queuing and loading, incorporated entry/exit and pedestrian flow considerations into the design, and prepared an operating plan for managing the flow of drivers and customers as they try to find each other.
- Designing a state of the art Automated Parking Guidance System (APGS) that displays the number of standard and ADA spaces available on each level of the garage, and then uses a red and green light system at each stall to direct drivers to empty stalls. The customer experience is made even smoother with prepaid parking options on Ticketmaster and a License Plate Recognition (LPR) car finder that helps guests locate their vehicle after hours of entertainment.
