As part of their downtown revitalization program, the Town of Babylon retained Walker to design a freestanding garage that would serve as a central transportation hub. The 919-space, 5-level Wyandanch Intermodal Facility provides access to the Long Island Railroad (LIRR), Suffolk County Bus Service, taxis, and automobiles. It also provides parking for commuters and serves the residents and shoppers in the Wyandanch Rising mixed-use, Transportation Oriented Development (TOD) community.

The project’s most significant complexity was designing an aesthetically pleasing facade that would be compatible with future residential construction abutting the north and west facades. The facility also needed to be designed for future expansion. Walker designed the facility in accordance with the client’s current and short-term (1- to 5-year) needs while carefully considering its future expansion. Our design accounted for future shared foundations, removable spandrels, planning for future traffic flow with the expanded garage, and accommodating shear footing.

Sustainable design elements include a storm water retention basin system that replenishes natural aquifers and reduces runoff to adjacent storm sewers, energy-efficient LED light fixtures provide high levels of illumination but require minimum maintenance. Additionally, the concrete mix contains recycled materials.

The structure features an independent precast stair elevator tower with unique stained-glass panels that creates a unique public space. The entry/exit has a single-arm gated system, and multi-meter spaces can be found in the garage.
