APGS Installation in an Award-Winning Garage

Walker Consultants prepared construction documents for the installation of an Automated Parking Guidance System (APGS) in the long-term parking structures at San Francisco International Airport (SFO).

Long-term parking consists of 5,000 spaces in two structures, the previously built Garage 1 and newly built Garage 2, linked by a pedestrian and vehicle bridge. The airport had already selected an APGS equipment vendor as part of the Garage 2 Design-Build process, and wanted to install the same system in Garage 1.

Walker worked closely with Nibbi Brothers General Contractors, the airport, and the APGS vendor to design and coordinate the installation in both structures. Walker began by creating overall site layout drawings, then developed drawings showing the location of APGS components. The design for Garage 1 had to comply with the existing structure’s height restrictions. Walker also provided drawings and specifications for the electrical and communications conduit and wiring.

The new Garage 2 was honored with a 2020 IPMI Award of Excellence for Best Design of a Parking Structure, and was named Best Project (North) by ENR California in 2019.

Walker’s experience and expertise facilitated the APGS installation and commissioning process for the airport. In addition, Walker was able to meet the airport’s DBE requirements.
